Home / German wishes and regrets with Konjunktiv II

How do I express a wish or past regret in German?

An independent Konjunktiv II wish can start with wenn or with the finite verb. Simple forms can concern the present; a perfect construction can express regret about an earlier situation. Doch or nur can strengthen the wish.

Express wishes and past regrets

Wenn ich doch mehr Zeit hätte! and Hätte ich doch mehr Zeit! are independent wishes. For regret about a completed past situation: Wäre ich doch früher losgefahren! Particles such as doch and nur strengthen the wish; they do not create the verb form.

7. Make a present wish with doch: you want more quiet.

Wenn es doch ruhiger wäre! or Wäre es doch ruhiger! Both express the same present wish; neither requires a main-clause consequence.

Separate a current wish from regret about the past

Choose the time you wish were different. For a current situation, a simple form such as hätte or wäre can express the wish. For an earlier event, use the appropriate Konjunktiv II perfect construction: Partizip II with hätte or wäre. The auxiliary follows the underlying perfect. With wenn, the finite verb comes last; without wenn, it comes first. Both patterns can stand alone as wishes. Doch or nur strengthens the wish rather than supplying the verb form.

Two worked examples

Wenn ich doch einen ruhigeren Arbeitsplatz hätte! The speaker wishes for a different situation now. Hätte stands last after wenn; no following result clause is required.

Hätte ich gestern doch die Adresse notiert! The speaker regrets not noting the address yesterday. Notieren takes haben, so the past wish uses notiert hätte, here with hätte first.

Apply the pattern

Additional check 1. You want more patience now. Form a standalone wish with doch, haben and verb-first order.

Hätte ich doch mehr Geduld! Hätte expresses the imagined current possession. A valid wenn alternative is Wenn ich doch mehr Geduld hätte!, but this prompt asks for verb-first order.

Additional check 2. Yesterday you left too late. Express regret with doch and früher losgehen, using verb-first order.

Wäre ich doch früher losgegangen! Losgehen forms its perfect with sein. The Konjunktiv II past wish therefore uses wäre with losgegangen.

Additional check 3. You mean a standalone wish: Wenn ich doch mehr Platz hätte! Is the sentence unfinished because there is no result clause?

No. The wish can stand alone. In a conditional use of wenn, a condition and its consequence would serve a different communicative purpose.

Questions about this topic

Does a wish clause need a following consequence?

No. Wenn ich doch mehr Zeit hätte! and a verb-first wish can stand independently. They express the wish rather than supply a condition that must be completed.
