The chart shows basic comparative forms and the common am superlative. Gern is an adverb expressing liking, rather than an ordinary attributive adjective: Ich lerne lieber morgens means that I prefer learning in the morning. For quantity, mehr Zeit has no extra adjective ending; die meisten Fragen is a frequent plural pattern.
German does not use an English-style long-adjective rule with “more”: interessanter is the ordinary comparative of interessant. Do not combine mehr with an already comparative adjective to translate “more interesting”. A longer word still normally forms its own comparison.
Check umlaut and the extra e
Some short adjectives change their vowel: alt → älter, warm → wärmer. Others do not: klar → klarer, bunt → bunter. Being one syllable with a/o/u does not automatically require an umlaut. Learn common changing stems and consult a dictionary for unfamiliar or variable forms.
Add case endings only where the role needs them
Der Raum ist ruhiger and Wir arbeiten ruhiger use the comparative without another inflectional ending. Before a noun, add the ordinary adjective ending after comparative -er: ein ruhigerer Raum; in einem ruhigeren Raum. In ruhigerer the first -er marks comparison and the second marks the noun phrase’s grammatical form.
State what you compare and on which scale
Raum A ist ruhiger als Raum B compares noise levels; Raum A ist so ruhig wie Raum B expresses equality. The comparison form does not supply the comparison group by itself. Der ruhigste Raum im Haus limits the claim to this house, not every room anywhere.
A comparative can appear without an explicit als phrase if the comparison is understood: Wir brauchen einen größeren Tisch. It may mean larger than our current table or a relatively large table, depending on context. Modifiers such as etwas, viel or deutlich refine the difference: deutlich günstiger. Avoid using a superlative as evidence when no comparison has actually been made.
Keep lexical differences visible
Hoch becomes höher, without the c, but the superlative is höchsten. Nah becomes näher and nächsten. In die nächste Haltestelle, nächste can mean the next stop in sequence or the nearest stop, depending on context. Die nächstgelegene Haltestelle explicitly selects nearest location.
Besser evaluates quality; lieber expresses a preference in Ich nehme lieber den Bus. Mehr increases quantity. A learner who wants more practice is not necessarily asking for better practice. Some adjectives describing absolute categories are compared only with a special contextual interpretation. For ordinary decisions, choose a scale that genuinely allows degrees and name it clearly.
Choose the form and explain the meaning
1. Compare speed: Der Zug ist __ als der Bus. (schnell)
schneller. Add comparative -er; no attributive case ending is needed after ist.
2. Form the comparative of interessant in ein __ Gespräch.
ein interessanteres Gespräch. First interessanter-, then neuter nominative/accusative adjective ending -es after ein.
3. Complete: Wir lernen in einem __ Raum. (ruhig, comparative)
ruhigeren. The comparative stem ruhiger- takes adjective ending -en in this dative noun phrase.
6. Correct: Der neue Kurs ist mehr interessanter.
Der neue Kurs ist interessanter. The German comparative already marks the higher degree; do not add English-style mehr.
8. Express preference, not quality: Ich lerne __ morgens als nachts.
lieber. The statement concerns when I prefer to learn. Besser would evaluate how well I learn instead.

Questions about this topic
Do all short adjectives take an umlaut?
No. Some common short adjectives do, while many others do not. Learn the changing stem with the adjective rather than predicting it from syllable count.
Why does ruhigerer have two er sequences?
The first marks comparative degree. The second is the adjective ending needed in a noun phrase such as ein ruhigerer Raum.
