Home / German Christmas cakes and biscuits: names explained

What do German Christmas biscuit and cake names mean?

Stollen, Lebkuchen, Vanillekipferl and Zimtsterne name different kinds of Christmas baking. Plätzchen is a broader word for small biscuits or cookies. Learn the names for a bakery conversation; they describe styles rather than guaranteeing one recipe.

The Dresden Stollen association describes Dresdner Christstollen as a raisin stollen made in and around Dresden. Its ingredient description includes butter, flour, milk, fruit and almonds; rum is optional. Therefore, do not infer “no alcohol,” “vegan” or “nut-free” from the name or photograph.
