Home / Condolences in German: respectful phrases and short messages

How do you express condolences in German respectfully?

Mein herzliches Beileid is a concise German expression of condolences after a death. In a personal message, you can acknowledge the loss and offer specific, optional support. Use dir/dein or Ihnen/Ihr consistently. You do not need to explain the loss or expect a reply.

The aim is to express sympathy respectfully. A short accurate sentence can be more appropriate than a long message full of assumptions. The examples below are language models; adapt the relationship and facts rather than copying a personal detail that is not true.

Choose a restrained opening

Mein herzliches Beileid and Mein aufrichtiges Beileid both express condolences. Beileid refers to sympathy following a death; it is not a general substitute for sorry about a delayed train or a missed appointment.

Wording by relationship
ContextOriginal modelWhat to check
Short personal messageMein herzliches Beileid. Ich denke an dich. You address this person as du.
Formal messageIch möchte Ihnen mein aufrichtiges Beileid aussprechen.Ihnen keeps formal address.
Message to a family you knowMein herzliches Beileid. Ich denke an euch.Euch refers to several people.

Add one truthful personal sentence

You can mention a memory if it is your own and fits the relationship. Avoid claiming to know exactly how someone feels. You also do not need to tell them to become strong or move on. These are choices about respectful wording, not rules about how people must grieve.

Mein herzliches Beileid. Ich habe die Gespräche mit deinem Vater sehr geschätzt.

Use the personal detail only when it is true.

Ich denke an dich und deine Familie. Du musst auf diese Nachricht nicht antworten.

The message expresses care without asking for a reply.

Offer support the recipient can accept or decline

A specific optional offer is easier to understand than a sweeping promise. Name what you can actually do and leave the choice open. Wenn du möchtest, bringe ich dir morgen etwas zu essen offers a concrete action without obliging the recipient.

For formal correspondence, you may keep the whole message to an expression of sympathy and your name. A religious statement is suitable only when it genuinely fits the relationship and beliefs; a neutral message does not require one.

Check the message before sending

Check the person’s name, the relationship and the address form. If you do not know the details of the death, do not guess. A short message does not need an explanation of why the loss happened. Give the recipient space to respond in their own way or not respond.

  • What I know for certain: ______
  • My opening: ______
  • One genuine memory or optional offer: ______
